SETTLEMENTS

Villages were unusual on Gotland in its earlier developing ages, the most common settlements were larger farms. Many of these has been inherited for several generations. The farms from the 17th and 18th century and the late medieval locations has provided Gotland with one of our most important outcome during long periods - the agriculture. Still today it is an important industry thanks to dynamic tradition and culture.
The typical farm is constructed with a limestone facade and plain gables.
Another typical house is called "bulhus" made by logs in timber framing. There is also a special sheep house called "lambgift". Its roof is covered with turf and on the top of the entrance two branches are crossed as a protection from evil spirits.
